We are near the end of January and as usual, my skin and hair are dry so I went looking looking for a natural and cheap way to hydrate my hair. I stumbled upon the benefits of Coconut oil and several different ways it can be used. I went ahead and gave the Coconut Oil Hair Mask a try! I already cook with coconut oil so had some in the cupboard but if you are out at the store there are several options to choose from. If you do not like the smell of coconut I would recommend buying a “Refined” type, this will not have a coconut scent. For me, I love the smell and it reminds me of the beach so I prefer “Unrefined”.
I used the Coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner and let is sit on my hair for about an hour. The key to using all natural coconut oil as a leave-in hair conditioner, is finding the right amount for your hair. A little goes a long way! I read 2-4 tablespoons is the average amount used but more or less may be needed depending on how long or thick your hair is. I melted mine before applying but I have also read you can apply it in the solid form. I would recommend doing this on a weekend as it takes a few washes to rid your hair of the oil and it can appear very greasy. After two washes my hair was super silky and shiny. Overall, I was happy with my experiment and will be doing it again!
