If you are like me, you probably have 5 weddings, a vacation, and 2 bachelorette parties to attend in the next year. You can see very quickly that you will be spending quite a bit on flights. DON’T PANIC. I have found a way to fly relatively cheaply for up to 23 months.
There is a loop hole in the Southwest companion pass and I am going to tell you how to get it. I would recommend doing this when you have some large expenses coming up, whether you are planning a wedding, buying a house, or going shopping for Christmas. Also, it is important to note that the closer you become “companion pass eligible” to January the better because the Companion Pass is valid for the rest of the calendar year in which you earned it, plus the entire following calendar year. Therefore, if you earn the 110,000 qualifying points as quickly as possible in the beginning of the year, you can have 23-plus months of free companion travel.
Steps you need to take-
1- You need to sign up for the Southwest Premier card when they are running the 50,000 points deal. You will need to spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open to get the points. Click here- SW Premier Card
2- At the same time you should sign up for the Southwest Business or Plus card when they are running the 50,000 point deal. You will need to spend another $2,000 in purchases in the first 3 months your account is open to get the points The Plus card promotion is very hard to find so many people do the business card. 3- Once you sign up and get your cards, start spending! You will get 50,000 points from each card once you hit the $2k spending in the first 3 months you will have 100,000 points and you get 1 point per $1 you spend so that will put you at 104,000 points. You need to get to 110,000 points to be companion pass eligible. I would recommend using the Shop through Southwest page (see our blog post about how to do this) Shop & Earn Rapid Rewards to get more points per $1 to get you closer, faster! Also, if you purchase one flight on Southwest and use your new credit card you get 2 points per $1 – the points add up quickly. You have no time limit on when you can get the extra points as soon as you get to 110,000 points you are eligible! You cannot transfer Ultimate Rewards from a friend or family member’s account, they do not count as Companion Pass-qualifying points and you cannot purchase the points either.
4- Sign up your companion and start bringing them along on every flight for free! You also have 110,000+ points you can use to book all of your flights! You will just have to pay the taxes for your companion’s flights.
It is a lot of spending up front but if you can use your card for groceries and every day stuff you will get the points faster than you think and will end up saving you money if you are planning on travelling a lot.
Lastly, I wanted to point out that Southwest has and still is expanding their Caribbean destinations so you can book a vacation with free flights to Aruba, Cancun, Cabo, Belize, Jamaica, Bahamas and more!
