I wanted to share how my experience has been working out while pregnant for those currently pregnant & future mommy’s-to-be! If you are like me then you lived a pretty active lifestyle before getting pregnant. I loved going to fitness classes weekly and worked out at least 5 times a week if not more. Then I got pregnant! Now, I am not saying you lose all drive to work out, but the first trimester is pretty exhausting and the morning workouts before work were no longer going to happen.
For some, you may not experience this extreme exhaustion but for most of you- be ready to faceplant at any time. During the first trimester I went to spin classes on the weekends and did a lot of walking on the treadmill. As time passed though, my lower back would not tolerate the walking on the treadmill. I will mention that everyone is different and some may be able to keep their same workout routines, this was not the case for me. I had to think of other options…
The best workout for me so far during pregnancy has been barre classes, I currently try to go to Barre3 at least once a week. It is low impact and there is a lot of modifications to the moves and it hits all the body parts. Barre3 in Columbus is currently running a Labor Day special (see below). Pure Barre is another great option if you have a studio close to you!
Barre3 Columbus- Now through Labor Day, get 6 classes for the price of 5 ($95).
Sale ends Monday, September 5 at midnight
614Cycle and CycleBar are two other great options for a good cardio class. It is hard to get a lot of cardio in if you are not a runner and cannot do the intense interval classes. You can push yourself as hard as you want and works up a good sweat! They often have specials too so follow their social media pages!
If you typically work out at home or at a gym there are a few Instagram accounts that I follow to give me good pregnancy work outs for free (YAY!)! You can also search pregnancy workouts on Pinterest to get some good ideas for at home workouts! Most of the moves are low impact and only include light weights. I also use the elliptical machine at the gym as it does not seem to bother my back like walking on the treadmill does. I tried to do yoga for a few weeks but I am just not feeling long and lean and my stomach kept getting in the way. I felt like I was having to modify every move, however, yoga is an amazing workout and is low impact so can be a great option.
I am currently trying to work out 3-4 times a week during my 2nd trimester, I am only 23 weeks so I am not sure how much energy I will have by the 3rd trimester. This is by far the best I have felt so I am going to take advantage as long as I can! If you work out you have to drink even more water, I mean TONS of water (even though I have to pee every 5 minutes) and get plenty of rest. If you have any other fitness pages you follow that you recommend or want to see us write about other topics, please share in the comments below!
Lastly, it is worth mentioning that a lot of your old workout leggings most likely will not fit you throughout your pregnancy. I have found that VSX pants are the very comfortable and stretch the most and I have bought a few cheaper pairs from Old Navy to last me throughout my pregnancy, they are comfortable and affordable!
Have a great week!
